Manliness

Son and I had a discussion on qualities that we think would make a real man. It's funny how different opinions are, although we both respect each other's opinion and ideas. Basically, he says that a man should know how to say "NO" and should be able to stand for himself, I agree with both characteristics, but for me, a man should be able to admit his mistakes. This point I see mainly because men are seen as proud and egotistical and as such, what makes a person truly a man is the fact that he can keep his pride in check - thus not conforming to the basic make up and instinct of every male human being. Besides, it is a quality that I know I have (not all the time, I admit, but I exhibit it more often than most). I can see from his ideas that he prefers strength, whereas I prefer civility and humility. There is nothing wrong with both conceptions, as a man should really be strong if he wishes to provide for himself and his family - and he should be humble lest he find himself in conflict with those he loves and provide for (thus rendering the purpose of his strength moot). We both agree that preconceptions like men should have sports, etc. are stupid. We are born with different interests and unique talents - society simply should not belittle those who do not conform to their erroneous standards. The media, though, does an excellent job in promoting these twisted standards... some even as stupid as "you're not a man until you get laid" and all that Bull. As a Christian, I would never agree to that... although it is true that sexual urges are strong in men, that is all the more reason to overcome it (not that I have... but I'm working on it) in order to be truly a man.
